In the 1880s he was a door to door salesman and often gave his lady customers a small gift of perfume . These were so popular he decided to start his own perfumery . He wanted to manufacture and sell direct and he established the Californian Perfume Company in 1886. All the details are on the mug and it explains how he built a lab and developed the business .
