The plastic clips were standard on 1970s onward locomotives such as GP50, GP38-2 and all the rest while the metal clips are included for several older models such as SW7 Cow and Calf combos, PA units, and others. As a side benefit, the metal clips were standard on all Athearn cars from the Blue Box era. So, use which is right for your engine and keep the other set of clips for future use.
