Description: This is a signed handwritten letter by Sir Arthur Helps (1813-1875), an English writer and dean of the Privy Council, in service to Queen Victoria. Helps was a Cambridge Apostle, and an early advocate of animal rights. The letter is written on a folded sheet of paper. Unfolded, the sheet is about 7" by 9". This sheet may originally have been two smallersheets of paper that have been glued together. The letter is addressed to "My dear Dr. Major ".I believe this was John Richardson Major (1797-1876). He was a Church of England clergyman who spent most of his life as a schoolmaster. He served for 35 years as the first head master of King's College School, London. He was frequently referred to as" the Rev. Dr. Major ". The only date on the letter is January 27th.No year is given. However, Helps lived at46 Chester Square in the 1840s and 1850s,and possibly for a more extended time than that. As best I can tell, the letter reads as follows: 46 Chester Sq. Jan. 27 My dear Dr. Major, I amengaged at 1/2 past1 to-morrow upona matter of businesswhich, as thereare lawyers inthe question, will probably last somehours: so I cannotcome to the speeches and, to tell the truth, I am notfond of such things,Parliamentary orotherwise. Perhaps, however,I may be able to come & see youin Bloomsbury Squareafterwards, and I shallbe most happy to do so. As to Mrs.Helps, she cannotbear much fatigueat present, & shehas an engagementfor the evening; butshe is much obliged to you & Mrs. Majorfor your kind invitation, and will come, if shefeels herself equalto it.
