These tags began as a means of identifying each plug of tobacco to prevent the unscrupulous from selling a cheaper product as a higher grade due to consumer inexperience.Round wooden plugs were first used by manufacturers with their company information printed on them until the advent of the colorful tin litho tags. The wooden plugs/tags were placed in intervals throughout the entire length of the slab or twist, which permitted the retailer to cut the lump into small pieces to suit his customer with each piece holding its manufacturer identity. P. Lorillard was the first company to use tin tags but at first placed the tags under the outside leaf wrapper of the tobacco plug which caused injuries to unsuspecting customers when cut or bitten. Sellers thereafter began to put them on the outside of the slab or twist.Tag collecting was a popular hobby as early as the 1880's as well as being used in exchange for “premium” household items such as tableware, knives, etc. which was a key strategy in the war for market supremacy. The peak of the tags occurred between the years 1897 to 1917 and their use was made obsolete in the 1920's when machines began wrapping one-ounce bricks of plugs in printed cellophane. By then, paper coupons had largely replaced tags in exchange for premium items. These tin tags have since become highly collectible pieces of history with their colorful graphic details.Thank you for stopping by and happy bidding Payment is due within 3 days of purchase if purchased by a best offer sale, otherwise Buy-It-Now sale requires immediate payment.
