Description: 1914 Flanders 4 Model B motorcycle engine serial #4096 complete late production and likely one of the last you will see, only two complete model B motorcycles are known to exist and only about two dozen complete Flanders motorcycles all years total are known to exist worldwide. Not only the rarity of this engine make it a desirable piece of American motorcycle history, but the importance of the man who founded it and his connection to Ford and Studebaker make it a most important item to consider for your collection. In 1905 Walter E. Flanders obtained a contract to produce 5,000 crankcases for Ford. Henry was so impressed with the quality and speed by which the order was filled he was hired by Ford in 1906 to become the company's production manager. In his two years there Flanders genius in machine layout and efficiency formed a foundation for development of the modern assembly line. In 1908 Flanders left Ford and went on to co-found the Everritt, Metzger & Flanders Automobile manufacturing company with Studebaker Company as it's sales marketer, which later took over the company by 1911 and had the second highest production of automobiles in the U.S. for a time. That same year Flanders would form the Flanders Manufacturing Company formed in part from the Pontiac Motorcycle Company in Chelsea, Michigan. Their motorcycle the Flanders 4 (4hp) and was priced at a very low price of $175, but the lack of a more powerful twinas other manufacturers were producing help spell the fate of this brand. (although one 1914 twin cylinder does exist and drew considerable interest at Mecum auctions) Of the 30,000-40,000 motorcycles projected to sell only about 2500 sold in two years and went into receivership in 1912 and eventually taken over with very limited production & sales taking place thru 1914. Flanders was involved in the manufacture of a number of other automobiles including the Rickenbacker and their related related businesses.
