Description: Antique Framed Oil Painting Mountain Landscape Jules Coignet of Paris Dated 1857. Signed Coignet 1857 lower right corner. The frame measures 25" x 29 1/2" that fits artwork 21 1/4" x 25 1/2". I acquired this many years ago from a local estate sale auction and it had descended from a wealthy Brookline MA. estate. The canvas has 1 large tear and several very small tears that I repaired with some cloth linen tape, I would suggest having it professionally restored or relined as it is quite special, the old possibly original frame has some edge wear and is solid & sturdy. See detailed photos. The first photos show the painting with the larger tear on the left side which happened after I had taken the other photos. Jules Louis Philippe CoignetBorn: 1798Died: 1860Similar to Camille Corot (1796-1875) and Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878), Jules Coignet received his education from the historic landscape painter Jean-Victor Bertin (1767-1842). In 1821 he left Paris to continue his education in Italy, where he developed an interest in view painting. He recorded his impressions in his pocket notebooks. He accumulated numerous sketches and drawings, which he developed (after the fact) into paintings in his studio.Coignet went back to France in 1827. In 1840 he went to Italy again, where he remained until 1843. He then explored the Middle East for many years. In 1824, for the first time he exhibited his works at the Salon. Jules Louis Philippe Coignet was born in Paris in 1798 and died there in 1860. He was a noted landscape painter who had studied under Jean-Victor Bertin. He travelled a good deal in his own country as well as elsewhere in Europe and the East, and produced a considerable number of views. A regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon exhibitions, he was awarded a gold medal there in 1824 and was given state recognition by being made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1836.As a painter, Coignet holds a middle place between the Idealists and the Realists, and his work is remarkable for the combination of vigour and delicacy in the effects of light and shade, for poetical feeling, for a firm brush, and occasionally for grandeur of conception.
