Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) ALLOA. The Forth has still considerable width at this town, and the new harbour and docks have increased the trade of the place. The principal manufactures are of yarn ( Alloa fingering" having a famous name), but there are also large distilleries and breweries and iron and copper works; in the immediate neighbourhood are coal-mines. In the Park on the east side of the town stands the Tower, dating from the 13th century, which was an old fortress of the Earls of Mar. In it Mary spent much of her childhood, and James VI. was also educated within its walls. The rest of the old mansion was burnt in i800. The new Alloa House was commenced in 1838, and contains many family portraits and interesting relics. There is also a commodious Town Hall after designs by Waterhouse.
