Flautist Ali Ryerson's second of her three Concord CDs remains one of her best all-around albums. Blessed with total command of her instruments (she switches to alto flute on several tracks) and the avoidance of common gimmicks, she is backed by a superb rhythm section consisting of pianist Harold Danko, bassist Jeff Fuller and drummer Terry Clarke. Not content to approach her instrument through just lyrical repertoire, Ryerson challenges herself with Danko's "To Start Again" and Kirk Lightsey's constantly twisting "Everything Changed." Her light-hearted setting of Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way" suggests a bird singing on a bright spring day, while she finds new facets in the modal gem "Blue in Green," bringing out new lyricism. Ryerson is equally at home with South American tunes like "Sometime Ago" and "Chega De Saudade."
