A first edition of one of Captain (later General) Charles King’s many novels about life on the Western frontier of the United States. A West Point graduate, Class of 1866, he commanded a cavalry troop against the Apaches in 1874 where he was severely wounded and forced to retire from active duty. However he continued his service in the Wisconsin National Guard and when the Spanish-American War began in 1898 he was appointed Brigadier General of volunteers and continued in service until his death in 1932. Enhanced by photograph of the author on glossy paper as a frontispiece. Hardcover book in Good+ condition, tight and clean with no marks except owner’s signature in pencil with 1899 date on front end-paper. Pages are clean and white with slight darkening near edges. Light green covers with silver and red titles on the spine and front and a design on the front are sharp and clean; mild wear at spine ends, along spine edge and corners. No dust jacket.
