This was a limited-edition set of commemorative stamps highlighting the most significant people, events, and accomplishments of the 20th century. A page was created for each decade, with the final sheet, the 1990's, issued on January 12, 2000. This 32c stamp recognizes the first crossword puzzle. Arthur Wynne created the first one to be published in the New York World on December 21, 1913. A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. These stamps have been designated as Scott Number 3183L.
