Description: Let's just start out by saying this is a very old crucifix, the oldest we've come across in 25+ years of dealing in antiques. We are saying 17th/18th century, however judging by the surface and the worm holes it could very well be older than that. It's an incredible piece of religious history, nicely detailed for it's age with a memento mori at the foot of the cross and carved relief designs around the base. There are wormholes throughout the base as well as scattered on the back of Christ's body. The family of the estate said it was purchased in Belgium, we're not sure if it originated there, but that's were it was prior to being here in the states. I don't think we will be lucky enough to ever find another one this early outside of a museum or church. Age - 17th / 18th century, possibly earlierApproximate Size - Just over 36 inches tall by just under 20 inches wide with the base being 6 inches front to backCondition - Overall wear and a few imperfections commensurate with age including some loss and repair to the sides of the INRI banner at the top, along with a repair or reinforcement that can be seen on the back where the cross lines intersect at the top and the base has a very early split in the wood near the top above the leaves that goes around, possibly the reason for the reinforcement board on the rear of the base, which looks like it has been on there for a long, long time, see photos for complete assessment.
