Description: Here is a shirt worn by American League umpire John Shulock during the 1996 Major League Baseball season. What dates it to 1996 is this: In 1996, MLB switched from the light blue button-down shirts used for many years to pullover knit polo shirts. They were navy with red and white trim on the collar and sleeve cuffs and red numbers on the sleeve. They offered an optional red polo with the trim colors reversed and the numbers in navy trimmed in red. Research indicates these were not often widely used with the exception of three umpires, who wore them behind home plate (while the other crew members wore the navy). John Shulock is not cited as one of the three that used them more often. The shirt was manufactured by Logo Athletic. Inside the collar are the MLB Genuine Merchandise Logo Athletic and washing instructions/size tags. The size is Large. The Logo Athletic logo also appears on the left sleeve. On the right sleeve is Shulock's #29. At the right front bottom is the DuPont CoolMax tag. The American League patch is sewed to the left breast pocket. John Shulock was an American League umpire from 1979 to 1999 and MLB umpire 2000-2002, and worked more than 3,000 games in 24 seasons. He kept #29 when MLB merged staffs in 2000. Shulock autographed the shirt on the upper left sleeve and added his #29. A nice piece of baseball history for collectors of umpire memorabilia. One of three I acquired several years ago; time to thin the collection. The other two will be going up soon, a 1994 American League button-down shirt # 7 with MLB 125th Anniversary patch, worn by Dave Phillips, and a 1997-99 National League light blue polo shirt #29 worn by Bill Hohn.
