Description: Climbs in the Alps and Caucasus, by A. F. Mummery, 1974Climbs in the Alps and Caucasus. Mummery, A. F. Lawrence, MA: Quarterman Publications, 1974. Alfred Frederick Mummery (1855-1895 Nanga Parbat) was an English mountaineer and author who had a major impact on the sport of mountaineering. He was a proponent of guideless climbing and his accomplishments popularized that kind of climbing; he felt that those who used guides were not even "real" mountaineers. His climb of Grepon in the Chamonix Aiguilles was a major feat at the time. He died in an avalanche on Nanga Parbat. Many photographic illustrations as well as sketches. Hardcover, with original dust jacket, 360 pages. Very good condition in good jacket with browning, chip at bottom of spine, and small closed tear top jacket at back, tape.
