Description: 1964 FIRECRACKER 400 Plus: 1964 SOUTHERN 500 This is a genuine Rare Sportsfilms copyrighted DVD The historic action highlights of both the 1964 Firecracker 400 at Daytona and the ’64 Southern 500 at Darlington is on a new high-quality COLOR DVD from Rare Sportsfilms, Inc! Never before available on DVD, the 1964 Firecracker 400 was the first Grand National win for A.J. Foyt! You’ll see action right from the start as A.J. is almost wiped out at the very beginning of the race when #2 Reb Wickersham spins out in turn 1! Richard Petty grabs the lead from pole-sitter Darel Dieringer on the first lap and sets the pace for the first 103 laps. Pit action is shown of the leaders Petty, Foyt and Bobby Isaac. The most spectacular crash of the race involves Ken Spikes, who loses his #95 Dodge out of turn four and smashes hard into the inside retaining wall, flipping his car! This crash on his 118th lap sends him to the hospital with a broken leg and other injuries. Just past the halfway point, Petty’s engine fails, setting up a battle between A.J. Foyt, driving #47 and Bobby Isaac in #26. Both red 1964 Dodges are prepared by Ray Nichels. Over the last 56 laps, teammates Foyt and Isaac trade the lead 16 times. Foyt catches Isaac for the final time on the last lap at the end of the backstretch and passes in turn three! Heading for the checker, Isaac comes within 4 feet of beating Foyt to the line, but A.J. wins – his first Grand National victory in ten starts! There’s also action aplenty in the 1964 Southern 500 at Darlington! Shown qualifying are Richard Petty, David Pearson and Fred Lorenzen. Before the race, other drivers and crewmembers are shown close-up trackside and in the garage area. Unlike the year before when Fireball Roberts won the non-stop Southern 500, this one has crashes and mishaps aplenty! No less than nine separate incidents are shown, involving Don Hume, Junior Johnson, Bud Moore, Lee Roy Yarbrough, Roy Tyner, David Pearson, Major Melton and others. As the green flag flies, Darel Dieringer spins in turn one taking Ned Jarrett with him and causing other cars to spin around them. It’s the beginning of a rough day for Dieringer, who soon spins again in turn three and later in the race tangles with Cale Yarborough before leaving the action for good. Tiny Lund thrills the fans when he loses control of his red #55 Ford in front of the main grandstands and fishtails down the track! The camera follows him around to his backstretch pit, but on the way, he and Bobby Johns hook bumpers in turn two! Meanwhile Petty and Pearson are dueling for the lead with Jim Pardue right behind in third. Broken wheel lugs take Pearson out of contention and makes it a two-way battle on the track between Petty and Pardue, with veteran Buck Baker now in third watching the action ahead and waiting for his chance. The climax of the race occurs when Richard Petty pits with a lap lead after 289 laps and Buck Baker in second place. The Petty Engineering Plymouth has burned an ignition wire, which costs Richard several laps and the race. Buck Baker is shown flying by the grandstand, taking over first place while Petty sits helplessly in his car! Winner pays shipping of only $3.25 on this item, which will be sent out by Media Mail!
