Description: This is the noted 1942/1-D Liberty Head ("Mercury") dime, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by ANACS as VG8, good Denver overdate with multicoloured toning. Unlike the Philadelphia version, this overdate was well engraved in the obverse die so that the pointed "flag" or serif of the "1" on top and left, and its base on the bottom, are visible as tiny protrusions from the numeral "2." This was the U.S.' first full World War II year, and guidance must have gone out to try to save government resources where possible...so the U.S. Mint did some overdates that year on leftover 1941 dies. This saved, all right, but then another chapter of coin variety was born. We found the overdate marks using a 60x loupe, so a magnifying glass should work too. Even as a VG8, this dime toned over the decades to show reds, blues, greens, and yellows in fields and devices (and devices take up much of the Mercury dime's available space), making this a premium circulated coin, which are hard to encounter. We offer this premium-quality item for you to fill your dime set, variety collection, or to acquire as a unique standout in your type set or collection of notable specimens.
