Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE JOURNAL OF JOHN JOURDAIN 1608-1617 Describing His Experiences in Arabia, India, and the Malay Archipelago Edited by WILLIAM FOSTER printed for The Hakluyt Society, Cambridge, in 1905. First edition. Released as Second Series No XVI of the Works Issued by The Hakluyt Society. In the spring of 1608 John Jourdain, who was in the service of the East India Company, sailed for the East in the good ship "Ascension" and did not set foot on English soil again until the summer of 1617. During the nine years of his travels over thousands of miles, visiting several places unknown to his countrymen, he kept a careful diary of his adventures. The book includes 3 full-page colour maps of The Yaman; Western India; The Malay Archipelago; and a page showing maps of Amboyna, and Buton.Mid blue hardboards with blind stamped decoration and a gilt illustration of the ship Victoria with gilt lettering on the spine. Slight darkening to the spine with minor wear along the hinges. Browning on the endpapers and last page.
