By Albert Barnes (1798–1870), American theologian. Includes some woodcut illustrations. ------- The Bible text does not mention the name of its author, however this has traditionally been attributed to Paul the Apostle. Scholars of Greek consider its writing to be the most polished and eloquent of any book of the New Testament. Epistle To The Hebrews has earned the reputation of being a masterpiece. There are two main themes : 1. The Supremacy of Christ. 2. Perseverance of Christians in Christ - especially in the face of persecution. Scholars believe it was written for Jewish Christians who lived in Jerusalem , probably in A.D. 63/64, though some believe it was written a few years later. Its essential purpose was to exhort Christians to persevere in the face of persecution. At this time, certain believers were considering turning back to Judaism and to the Jewish system of law to escape being persecuted for believing Christ to be the messiah. The theme of the epistle is the doctrine of the person of Christ and his role as mediator between God and humanity. ------------------ Condition. Worn binding.
