Doesn't just cover geology and agriculture but the entire social history of those 2 states (remember: Alabama was the east half of the Mississippi Territory for many years). The original Alabama State Archivist & historian Thomas Owen, in his monumental BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ALABAMA, had this to say about the Wailes' book: "The historical outline presents a continuous narrative from 1699 to 1798 based on the usual authorities and some hitherto unused manuscripts. The subject of land titles . . . of great importance in the history of Alabama as well as Mississippi [is] treated with a fullness and detail not elsewhere found. The historical illustrations are of great value."CONDITION: BARELY ex-library: has a Birmingham Southern College Library blindstamp in title leaf, perhap a call # blacked out on the lower spine (I'm not really sure), absolutely no other indicators of being ex-library: no rubber stamps, no call letters on spine, no marks (other than blind stamp) on title page; no card pocket at rear of book. Map has a 1" marginal tear where it was bound into the book; binding cloth shows some very minor soiling & chipping, else VG+ with bright gilt on the spine. ALL COLOR & TINTED PLATES are present (though some are out of order) and very bright & sharp. Bought legally at the recent auction of Birmingham Southern's Rare Book Room, sold by the college to help defray expenses of the college's closure.
