Click here or image for larger version Thames Tunnel, also called WAPPING-ROTHERHITHE TUNNEL, tunnel designed by Marc Isambard Brunel and built under the River Thames at London, from Rotherhithe to Wapping, the first subaqueous tunnel in history. To drive his heading, Brunel invented the tunneling shield, one of the basic tools of modern civil engineering. It was completed in the early 1840s. The completed tunnel measured 1,506 feet (459 m) in length; its cross section measured 23 by 37 feet (7 by 11 m) and was for many years the largest of any soft-ground tunnel. The tunnel is in regular use today as part of the Metropolitan Line of the London Underground. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. Buyer pays shipping at cost.
