HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Peter Jansen Wessel Tordenskiold (1690-1720), commonly referred to as Peder Tordensckfold or Tordenskjold, was a Norwegian nobleman and flag officer who spent his career in the service of the Royal Dano-Norwegian Navy. His birth name was Peter Jansen Wessel. His name occurs with spellings as Peder and Pitter. Upon his ennoblement in 1716, he received the name Tordenskiold, by King Frederick IV, meaning "Thunder Shield". This was also the orthographical form which he used. In newer times, the form Tordenskjold has become usual. He rose to the rank of vice-admiral for his services in the Great Northern War. His greatest exploit came later that year, as he destroyed the supply fleet of Charles XII of Sweden at the Battle of Dynekilen, ensuring his siege of Fredriksten would fail. He ranks among the most famous naval captains in Denmark and Norway. He experienced an unusually rapid rise in rank and died when he was only 30 years old. He began worked first at the university of Halle and later moved to Prague, where he stayed from 1730 to 1735. In Prague he mainly produced engravings of holy images. He returned to Leipzig were he became a sought-after copperplate engraver. He created portraits of royalty, statesmen, doctors, lawyers and theologians.
