Cottage Garden, Annual. FYI, the Seeds are viable for several years and are fresh from my 2023 crop of purple hyacinth bean vine seeds. The purple hyacinth bean vine is a vigorous ornamental annual vine. It grows quite fast and will do well on fences or a trellis. (I even grew it on a metal log carrier!) The purple hyacinth bean plant (Dolichos lablab or Lablab purpurea), features displays of beautiful pinkish-purple blossoms and shiny reddish-purple pods, that grow to be about the same size as lima bean pods. The hyacinth bean plant adds lots of color and interest to any garden, right through fall. The blooms of the hyacinth bean vine have a pleasant scent. They also attract bees and hummingbirds!! They can also be used as cut flowers. The purple hyacinth beans will grow in just about any soil type, but seem to do best when planted in a full sun location. These vigorous growers do require a very sturdy support that is at least 10 to 15 feet high, to keep them from toppling to the ground during gusty wind. Ideal for growing this lovely vine on a sturdy trellis, fence or arbor. The seeds can be sown directly outdoors, once the threat of frost has passed. Seeds can also be started indoors several weeks before the weather warms, although they really “take off” when the heat of summer comes. Transplants are best, when planted once the plant has several young leaves. For those wanting to grow additional plants, the seed pods can be harvested. ⭐️Knowing when to pick purple hyacinth bean seed pods is helpful. Once the flowers fall from the stem, the deep purple pods begin to take on significant size. The best time to harvest the bean seedpods is when the pods shrivel and fade. Seeds are very easy to keep. You can use them next year in your flower garden or landscape. The seeds can be easily removed from dried seedpods for storage. The seeds may rage in color from brown to dark purple or black when dried out to be stored for future planting. Once the seeds have been planted, these low maintenance plants require very little care. Be sure to provide regular water for transplants and seedlings for best results. An awesome choice for any garden or landscape. Perfect choice for planting anywhere you would like to add some color. Also makes a nice way to make a fenced area more appealing. Great for attracting bees and hummingbirds!! *ENLARGE MY PHOTOS FOR A BETTER LOOK, ESPECIALLY if you have a TABLET!
