Once established, Wild Thyme will need little maintenance and is considered rather drought tolerant as well. A very popular variety of groundcover which is used in between bricks, and walkways. You can also sow Thymus serpyllum directly in flowerbeds, along driveways and in other natural settings as well. How to Grow Thyme as a flowering groundcoverThyme is an herb with a variety of uses. It is delicious when added to a number of recipes, but also has antibacterial properties and functions as a natural insect repellent. Some gardeners keep it around simply for its intoxicating scent. There are hundreds of species of thyme, and all of them are relatively easy to grow from seed. However, it is best to start this slow-growing herb indoors. Delicate juvenile plants need protection until they are strong enough to weather the outdoors. Creeping Thyme seeds are extremely tiny and are best started indoors, in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. The seeds should be sown directly to the surface of the soil so that they will receive direct lighting for optimal germination. Transplant entire peat pots into the garden or permanent containers in the Spring.Creeping Thyme will require an area of direct sunlight for germination and growth. The soil should be rich, fertile and well draining as well. If your soil is hard and compact, it is recommended to mix in compost to improve drainage. Water the tiny seeds daily with a mist setting or spray bottle (to ensure that the soil is moist but not soaked) until germination occurs. Thyme will usually begin to germinate within 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of around 6 to 12 inches tall. When transplanted or grown outdoors, be sure to space plants about 6 to 12 inches apart from one another. SAVE NOW!
